IN THE WEST.
AT HILL 30*. GERMANS GAIN FOOTING. Paris, May 5. A communique states that after a vielent bombardment westward of the Meuse the Germans made a strong attack on our positions northward of Hill 304. They were repulsed as a whole, but gained a footing at some points of an advanced trench. SOME DESPERATE FIGHTING. Received May 7, 5.5 p.m. •Paris, May 6. A communique says: A surprise attack on Friday evening penetrated the German trenches eastward of Lunaville road, in the Argonnc, and we brought in prisoners. A German bombardment with heavy calibre suffocating gas shells continued with unprecedented violence at night, westward of the Meuse. We evacuated portion of the trenches on the northern slopes of Hill 304, which were completely wrecked and untenable. Our batteries replied with equal energy, checking the German advances.
We repulsed with the bayonet German attacks westward and north-westward of the Hill. There is a slow and continuous German bombardment against the Mort Homme-Cumieres lines. A fresh German division attacked Hill 304 on Thursday and sustained crushing losses.
