A PRETTY SCENE. < It was a happy thought 011 the par# of some one that led to the promotion, | after the Chrysanthemum bliow, of ft, chrysanthemum fete, ill the Good Temp- , lar Hall yesteday. The idea at onca caught on, and the ladies' committee of ' the Horticultural Show, together; witk i Mrs. C. H. Burgess (Mayoress), Mid & willing band of helper* worked hard to ensure its success. A glimpse at the hall yesterday showed that a great . transformation had been effected by a. number of ladies, charming stall of lovely chrysanthemums • having i been erected, and in these a number of ladle* were working their hardest disposing of . flowers, pot plants, sweets or cake ( -in aid of the fund. And they had a large quantity to dispose of, for in addition to practically all the exhibitors who left their blooms, pot plants were sent in by Mrs. Messenger, Mrs. Bradbury, Colonel Messenger and othorß, whilst flowers, eakes, sweets, etc., were forwarded by, many people from all over the district. ■ In a very dainty lavender stall. ettit-' ably decorated, and kindly loaned to Mrs. Burgess by the Stratford ladles s Mrs. E. A. Walker disposed of quite « host of lavendei and scent sachets, and oth'ei' articles made by members 4)f the Victoria League and friends, F. Blundell, D. K. Morison and Mist J5. Bayly superintended the chrysanthemum stall; Mrs. Ellerm and Miss Fabian had charge of the pot plants at the foot of the stage; Mrs. Matthews and Miss Belle Smith did good business at the* cake stall; and Misses Brewster and Miss Blundell looked after the sweets stall. Mesdames H. Stockley, W. L. Newman, C. Denny Brown, C. E. Baker,' and Miss Hempton had charge of the-after- ' noon tea arrangements, with a fevy o( young ladies, in Japanese costumes, it< tending. ; Mrs. D. K. Morison made a beautiful cake, which -formed the subject of » guessing competition, of which the doner had charge. It was won by Mrs. New* man, who re-donated it, Miss Hamerton winning it. This realised £1?. A competition organised by Mrs. Ellern for , a begonia, of which she was the-, donor, realised £1 fls Od, and was won by Mr». Hard. The ladies who assisted with , the competitions were Misses Fabian and Hempton, i During the afternoon Mrs Woods' or- " chestra played most enjoyable selection*, ■and in the evening a short musical pro* gramme was submitted, including pianoforte solos by Miss Bryden, song by Miss Ij. Moon, cIX-yaanthemum march by the Technical College girls, ai^'recitation by Master Ken Neil.' Bwe »M a good attendance in the afternoon, but in the evening it was not commensurate with the objects of the gathering, namely, the assistance of the Serbia** I and Belgians, nor with the hard work that, the ladies had put in. It is expected that the-funds will benefit to fh<( extent of over £4O. *
