THE DEFENCE OF KUT. GENERAL rOWNSHEND'S MESSAGE. "THE FORTUNE OF WAR." Londoit, May 4. Lord Kitchener, in the House of Lords, warmly eulogised General Townshend and the defenders of Kut. He read General Townshend's last message as follows:—"We are pleased to know we have done our duty, and recognise that the situation is one of the fortunes of war. Thank you, General Gorringe, and all ranks of the Tigris force for the great efforts to save us."
A HEROIC RESISTANCE. MORE PRAISE FROM IC. OF K. Received May 5, 10.55 p.m. London, May 5. Lord Kitchener added that the House c-ould not fail to realise the tense strain borne by the troops, who had been holding their posts for upwards of twenty weeks under abnormal climatic difficulties, and on restricted rations. General Townshend and his troops will have the satisfaction of knowing that their comrades in Parliament and in the country know that they did all that was possible to resist to the last.
Lord Kitchener highly praised Generals Lake and Gorringe.
