FRENCH HOLD GROUND. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT.

Wellington, May 2. The High Commissioner reports, under date London, May 1, 3.10 p.m.:— East of the Meuse, following a violent bombardment, the enemy yesterday evening directed a powerful attack in dense formation against the . trenches .taken by us north of Mort Homme. Our curtain of fire and machine-gun fire caused enormous losses, all the enemy assaults being broken. North of Oumieres two counter-attacks at the same time on the trenches taken by as yesterday were equally repulsed. In the course of a third attempt the enemy set foot in our lines, but was unable to maintain himself and was thrown out with serious losses. There has been a violent and continuous bombardment at Hill 304 and in the region of Vaux.

During Saturday night our bombarding air squadrons dropped numerous bombs on the station, food depot and' munitions store at Sebastol, south of Thiaueonrt, on the roads about Etain, bivouacs near Spincourt, and stations near Apremont, Grande Challerange and Vouzieres. Numerous explosions and fires are reported, ~
