THE CALL FOR MEN.

THE SIXTEENTH REINFORCEMENTS,

DEPARTURE FOR CAMP. TARANAKI'S FULL QUOTA, Yesterday morning T&ranaki's quota for the Sixteenth Reinforcements left by the mail train for camp, and the full complement of men entraining at the various stations. Despite the very unfavorable weather there was a large attendance of townspeople at New Plymouth station to give the men an enthusiastic farewell. The Citizens' Band, under Bandmaster McLeod, was also present and rendered a number of appropriate selections. The men were assembled at the rooms of the Ladies' Patriotic Committe,e and were each presented by the Mayoress (Mrs. Burgess), on behalf of the committer with hold-alls, etc., whilst the Mayoress herself very kindly supplied the men with a cup of tea and refreshments.

At the railway station, the men were addressed by the Mayor (Mr. G. H. Burgess), who said that time moved along very quickly, and here they were farwelling the men of the Sixteenth Reinforcements. Whilst it was no pleasure to be farewelling men who were going forth to the cause for which they were going, it was very gratifying indeed to see such a good muster. If they continued to muster so well it would not be ■necessary to bring in compulsion. So far as New Plymouth itself was concerned, its quota was 14 men per month, and he thought they should be able to get that number. He hoped all would use their influence in obtaining recruits. They would have seen that we had suffered a disaster in Mesopotamia, where General Townshend had had to surrender with 9000 |icn. This should act as an incentive to recruiting, for it would be realised that we wanted men and more men. On behalf of the town he wished the men who were about to leave God-speed and a safe return. Cheers were given for the men at'the call of the Mayor, and a few minutes iater, when the train steamed out of the station, they we're heartily repeated, the band playing "Auld Lang Syne" and the gathering dispersed after the playing of the National Anthem. • The men who left New Plymouth were:—
