THE BIRD PEST.
To the Editor. ■Sir, —Farmers can be laud in cumplaints against unseasonable weather, blights, flies and other Ills over which they have no control, and yet suffer to go unchecked another ,>erlmps greater scourge, which by concerted action could be greatly lessened. I refer to the small bird pest. The damage done to crops sown at this time of t'he year bv these feathered parasites, and the resultant loss to farmers, is almost inciedible. Is there no governing body in existence to take action in this matter? At one time, I believe, the County Council used to supply poisoned grain in large quantities. C'ould not that body be induced to revert to its old practice, and, further, proclaim a week for general poisoning, throughout the county? This proposal may seem cruel, but I assure you such action i= a necessity and of vital importance if production is to be maintained at a maximum. —I am, etc., FARMER. Omata, April '2B.
