Mr. H. W. Reid, who leaves to day for camp, was »n Saturday presented by the Fitzroy bowlers with a wristlet watch. Tie lias also received a memento from the Witiora iiolf Club.
The death is reported of Mr. John Rose, well-known as the inventer of the starting-machine »n most of the racecourses. He died at Uio residence, Wellington, at the age of 75 years. He arrived in this country during the Maori war sixty years ag«, and did his part in many ways typical of the early settlers.
Cn the evening of Thursday, March 2, the remains ot the late Lieut, Harold Jennings, who passed away at Athlone op. Fs»ruar,v 28, were removed to St. Peter's parish church, Athlone, writes ii London mrresposdent. They were taken ou a gun-carriage with the military escort, and the varieus batteries in the garrison were represented in the cwtege. At 9 a.m. a Requiem High Muss and Office were sung in St, Peter's Cluireh for the repose of the soul of the young New Zealander. There w(is a large attendance of soldier?. The funeral took place at two o'clock, and Hie interment was carried out with full military honsr?. A guard of honor consisting of lieutenants escorted the gun-carriage. A wreath was sent by the High Commissioner. The late Lieut. Jennings was the eldest son of Mr. W. T. Jennings, MjP. for Taumarunui, and was wounded at Loos. He was discharged from liospital some time ago, but his health remained indifferent, and other complications developed.
