FIRE IN DEVON STREET.

TWO SHOPS DAMAGED.

A fire broke out at the rear of Messrs. Xippert Bros premises in Devon Street shortly before two o'clock yesterday morning, and after spreading into the shop the, flames extended their operations into' Mr. T. Hood's pharmacy establishment, the outbreak not being extinguished before materia) damans was done to .both shops. The fire had a good hold of the back part of Nippert's shop when it was first noticed, but the briga3e arrived on the scene with commendable promptitude, and a good supply of water was soon arresting the progress of the fire. Inflammable matter in Nippert's build: ing proved splendid food for the flames, which swept into tho shop, and then entered Mr. Hood's shop, which adjoins Nippert's premises. After about half an hour's fighting the fire was checked. The back portions of both shops were completely gutted, while the stocks were damaged by fire and w T ater.

Jfippert's shop is owned by Mr. \V. Brown (of Lepperton), and the insurance is not known. Nippert's stock is eovereby a policy in the Guardian office for £llS!>. Mr. Hood's shop is owned by Mr. Griffiths (of Hastings), and the insurance is not available. The stock is insured for £SOO in the United and Victoria offices.

[lt is a coincidence that the same premises were gutted by fire on Good Friday, 1912.]
