On February IB last the Russians performed what was described as the "miracle of the war," by capturing Erzerum and its garrison of 235 Turkish officers, 12,753 men, 9 standards, 323 guns and great quantities of ammunition, arms and provisions. On February 29, a wireless message received in Rome stated that a Russian attack on Trebizond was imminent, but it has taken nearly two months for the Russian forces to reach and capture that seaport town, which was supposed to be strongly defended. Trebizond is only 110 miles north-west of Erzerum, but the country between these two important towns in Asiatic Turkey is very difficult for a modern army to traverse even in the best season of the year, and in the winter season would severely tax the hardihood and skill of the Russians. There is no very suitable port at Trebizond, but its capture gives the Russians the advantage of controlling the southeast corner of the Black Sea.
