■■]■§>£: TURF TOPICS. I " (By "Moturoa.") Those who backed Desert Gold on Wednesday, and after seeing the invincible daughter of All Black land the Awapuni Gold Cup with ridiculous ease, went ro'.md co the totalisator and passed over a silver coin to get their original jnuidlet back must have tumbled to the 'fact that they were the champion "jays" on th<s racecourse. Really, the wliole bunch of them ought to have been lined up and photographed as "awful fixamples" of persons whose arithmetic had been shockingly neglected. To back a winner and come out a loser, requires particular stupidity. Jivery racegoer is supposed to know that our benign Government (which abhors gambling,.of course), calmly ''lifts" about 12J per cent of the totalisator investments before the public has a chance of winning, adn a casual glance at the machine on Wednesday last would have convinced a fourth standard "snooker" that an investment on Desert Gold, who carried over 00 per cent, of the amount rung up, was only going to result in a less—either partial or total. The seven Chinamen—l. presume they were Celes Hals—who backed Wishful on the off] ehance that Desert Gold might drop dead, or that O'Shea might fall off, showed infinitely more judgment. The Sires' Produce Stakes was one of the gems of tho day. Ten sported silk, and Sasanoff and the bracketed pair Egypt and Bjomeborg were slightly better backed than Hyttus. Bjomeborg was first away, with Meuelaus, Thestins and Hyttus right on bis "hammer." Hyttus took the lend at the bend, and stalling off challenges by Thestins, Menelaus, The Toff, Egypt, and finally Sasanoff, got home by less than a length, with the rest almost in line. It was a pretty flutter. Tararua Jack was just a shade better fancied than Mr. F. Armstrong's 'Slcight-of-Hand in the Karerc Hurdles, Parawanui being No. 7 in the order of favoritism. .The pace won on from the jump, Slcight-of-Hand and Parawanui racing the others oil' their feet. Parawanui shook his new clmni rival off at the last fence, and finishing strongly got home by a good margin from Tararua Jack, who just headed Slcight-of-Hand over the last twenty yards, Glenorchy was fourth, and. the Auckland boom, Hopye, hopped in last. Tinkler was reckoned the correct thing in the Maiden, but backers of the favorite were having an anxious time when they saw "Lady Kilworth with a big lead Hearing the home turn. Then McLean called on Tinkler, and in a moment the whole aspect was
changed, and the public rushed round to collect. Henry Clay was running on well in third place, and Quinn's Post was next.
On Trentham running, Adjutant looked a good bet in the Autumn Handicap, and he justified the support of an army of backers by winning decisively. Zete's led off from Byron, Mandoline, and a bunched lot, but before reaching the straight Harold Young had rushed Adjutant to the front, and Square Deal (R. Reed) went with him. Both horses were under pressure right up to tlie judge's box, but Adjutant finished very true and won by a length. The. unfortunate—or should we say, ''badly placed,"— Moulu was a fair third (as usual), and Bertrada was most prominent of the others.
Despite recent 'failures Ring Lupin was better backed than the consistent Gang 'Awn in the Woodhey Hack Handicap. Ring Lupin led the big field to the bend and then collapsed, Gang 'Awa and Heel-Tap singling themselves out. A ding-dong finish saw Charlie Price push the Fordell horse home a head in front of Heel-'"ap. Revalenta, who was oadly placed in the early stages, came very fast into third place, and was followed by Martlet and King Lupin. Eeyal Chef and Golden Grafton ran badlv.
Of the eleven left in the Telegraph Handicap, Multiplication, Hydras and Astor were entrusted with the bulk of tho coin. Veto, who was little fancied, got to the front early, and wlien they straightened up for home was two lengths clear of the field. In the last furlong Multiplication made a hack of the mare, however, and won easily by a couple of lengths. Jean Laddo was a similar distance away, third, and Hydras fintsVed fourth. Astor, who looked leg-weary as tho result of hard racing at Trentham, failed to hit the front.
Apart from the Gold Cup, which resulted in less than a hundred pounds being rung up on the totalisator, the investments were only moderate all day. and the total figures showed a shortage of £OO7O. The attendance was not up to the average, possibly owing to the refusal of complimentary tickets—the gathering being solely in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. If such was the case it says very little for the patriotism of sporting folk in the Manawatu district.
This year's Melbourne Cup stake, in consequence of the reduction on ac: count of the war, will only b" worth £7OOO. That's a paltry prize, isn't it? Hardly worth taking home!
