SINKING OF THE PROVENCE.
HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE. It has been announced by the French Government that there were nearly 4000 men on :hc French auxiliary cruiser Provence when she was sunk in the Mediterranean on February 2(i. On board the Provence were the staff of the Third Colonial Infantry Regiment, the third battalion, the second company of the first battalion, the second machine-gun company, and one extra company—nearly 4000 men. The number of survivors was 870, and it is estimated that upwards 3000 lives were lost. This is the greatest ocean disaster of modern times. The greatest number of lives previously lost in one wreck was when the White Star liner Titanic struck an iceberg off the Newfoundland banks on April 14, 1012, and sank, with a loss of 1595. The rescued numbered 743.
