GREECE.
NEW NAVAL BASE. IN THE lONIAN SEA. DEFENSIVE ANGLO-FRENCH MOVE. Received April 12, 9.40 p.m. Athens, April 11. The Anglo-French Ministers have informed M. Skouloudis that it is intended to land forces at Cephalonia, especially in the harbor of Argostoli, and they gave, assurances that Greek sovereign rights would be respected. The Premier energetically announced that he could only protest against this fresh infringement of Greek sovereignty. Phe British Minister was given an audience by King Consiantine, and later the Anglo-French Legations announced that the establishment of a naval bate at Argostoli was purely a defensive measure. (Cephalonia is the largest of the seven lonian isles, lying to the west of the Greek mainland, opposite the entrance to the Gulf of Lepanto. Its area is 300 square miles, its coastline is deeply indented, and its surface is mountainous. Population over 80,000.)
