YJOLA DAXA TO-XTfiHT AT THE THKATIIE ROYAL. Who. having soon it, will forget "The Stoning," anil Yiola Dana's truly great portrayal in that intense picture? And yet tliu "Children of Eve," to he shown to-night at the Theatre Royal, is, it has to he acknowledged, a greater picture than ''The Stoning,"' and Miss Dana is seen in a much stronger part. As the title suggests, "The Children of Eve" is a picture that gets away from the beaten track. It is a "strong" play, and deals frankly with some of the serious problems of life and conveys in its story a powerful lesson. There is much qiiaint humor, some sensational incidents, and scones of grim reality and tender pathos, made convincing by clever acting. The production is by the Edison Co., in three reels, anil deals with the dreadful conditions which arise in large cities when the employment of child labor is not restricted by stringent legal measures. Miss Dana,'as Mamie, was not allotted an easy task, but showed a keen appreciation of 4hn nobler side of the character, and all who view her work on the screen will surely learn to love the notorious East-side girl, who jumped at the chance to do good, and earned a crown of martyrdom in the burden of social work she so willingly took upon her shonldcv.s. The story has a decidedly dramatic ending, the former persecutor of hapless children resolving to spend the evening of his life in an effort to right the wrongs of his victims and others of their kind. Three other films support the feature drama. The "Pathc Gazette" gives the latest topical views in picture form, while "The Movements of Animals" is a iPathe picture of educational interest. « "Cutey as Fortune Hunter" is a Yitagraph comedy with Wallie Yan as the chief purveyor of mirth. The programme will be shown for three nights. EMPIRE PTCTTJR EPALACE. The new programme of pictures at the Empire Picture 'Palace inaugurated on Saturday proved to be very successful, and for the following two nights .-Should bo a good drawing medium. Another episode in "The Million Dollar Mystery" is shown, and with it is given a further insight into the machinations of. the "Flack Hand Clang." In this instalment Ihe heroine is once more in the clutches of the. villains, only to lie dramatically rescued, motor-car.s, racing motor-boat's and a hydroplane being requisitioned and used in a manner that provides the audience with an unstinted fare of enjoyment and excitement. A.lilm that will prove very attractive shows the march of the Eighth reinforcements through the streets of Wellington and their embarkation on the troopships at the King's Wharf, and their subsequent march through the streets of Cliristclnireh and the review in Cranmer Square. Ther,» is a great deal of local interest in this fine film by reason of the fact that so many of the officers and men can be recognised as the picture is reeled off. . The main features in the programme are ably supported by other pictures of a more or less humorous nature, and to-night and to-morrow night the patrons of the .popular "Empire" can bo assured of an' entortaiiiment at once R™?j*Me and
