THE AURORA.

SHACKLETOX'S MEXU. Before. Sir Ernest Sliaekleton left on his voyage to the South Pole he went to Norway in order to test the food that should be taken in the Aurora, and after this fairly reliable experiment, he mapped out the" day's work and eating on the following "lines: — 7.8 a.m.—Preparation for the start and breakfast, consisting of 3oz. of lard per man, 2oz. of sugar, loz. of dried milk, wheat, protein and oats. 3.12 middav.—March.

12.1 p.m.—Rest and lunch, consisting of nut food, composed of Brazils," almonds and beech nuts, mixed with oil; and dried milk; oats. 1.5 p.m.—March.

5.7 p.m.—.Pitch camp, rest and take dinner, consisting' of the same food in the same quantity as at breakfast. 7 p.m. to 2 a.m.—Sleep.

Each man is allowed only 350z. of tood a day, as compared with the 4Soz. which ,the average mortal in England consumes. The lard and sugar supply heat, the protein muscle, the nuts arc the most nourishing food in the world, and the oats, which swell internally, will afford the bulk necessary to prevent the organs from becoming atrophied. Sir Ernest admitted that it was rather a greasy compound, and that when tlie party tried it in Norway, they found it a very unpleasant ration. But tlie scientists maintained that it* was a perfect food for the intrepid explorers.
