THE PROPHET RUA.
, HIS ARREST. - ißy Telegraph.—Press Association, . Giaborne, March' SI. A' party of six armed police, under Sub-Inspector Johnston, left to-day for the prophet Eua's stronghold, to co-oper-ate with the Auckland police party. Rua is believed to be in ambush at Maungatohuta, about 70 miles from Gishornc. The track is over very rough country, and the police are not expected to arrive there till late to-morrow. People who are acquainted with the district believe that should occasion arise Rua and his followers will make towards Waikaremoana, where the very heavy bush would assist him.
A story is in circulation aftiong local Maoris that Rua has been pretty well supplied with rifles and ammunition by Assyrian hawkers, who bought them casually in Auckland and smuggled them into the Urewera country under their fancy goods and cloths. The story that 1 Rua has a machinegun is generally discredited. Rua's bodyguard is known to comprise several hundred Maoris, and local natives believe that he will firmly resist arrest unless confronted by an overwhelming force, in which event he would take to the bush around Waikaremoana.
