EGMONT WINTER MEETING.

In another column appears the programme for the Egmont Racing Club's winter meeting, to he held at Hawera on Wednesday and Thursday, May 10 and 11. The stakes offered are liberal, and the menu provided is well worth the careful attention of horse-owners, not only in the province, but in the whole of the North Island, It is a pity that no steeplechases have been included; but probably the Egmont Racing Club consider that war time is no time for experiment. The programme is divided into seven races each day; of which two are open events on the first day, and a like number on the second. The chief events are the Mcßao Memorial Handicap, of £OO sovs, 1J miles; Manaia Handicap, of 200sovs, 1 mile and a distance; Tawhiti Handicap, of 150 sovs, 0 furlongs; and Mokoia Handicap, of 150 sovs, 0 furlongs. The remaining events all carry generous stakes, and merit good entries. Nominations for all events close on Monday, April 17, and acceptances are due on Wednesday, May 4. The detailed programme will be found in our advertising columns. Entries for the Waimate Plains annual trotting meeting close on Thursday, April 6, at 9 p.m. Those interested should j note that the Hawera telegraph office closes at 8 p.m.
