AMUSEMENTS.

"HOW WE BEAT THE EMDEN." A stirring chapter of real Australian history is treated in a masterful manner in the Australasian Film Co.'s "feature' 1 subject, "How We Beat the Emdcn," which appeared for the first time at the (Theatre .Royal with the new programme Jast night. There is probably nothing so thrilling in the Commonwealth history as the duel between H.M.A.S. Sydney and the German cruiser Emden off Cocos Island, which terminated in the crushing defeat and destruction of the "raider ofj'the East." The portrayal aroused the greatest enthusiasm. Another splendid film shown was "In the Days of Famine," a Vitagraph Broadway star feature, the story depicting a supreme test of manhood that shows what real character is. It surpasses belief and overwhelms one's sense of the beautiful. In addition were "The Master Key" (13th episode), "Topical War Budget," "Windlierk" (scenic) and "His Bodyguard" (comedy). The same programme will be repeated to-night and at I both performances to-morrow.

EMPIRE PICTURE PALACE. "The Lure of the Mask" will be screened for the last time to-night at the Empire Picture iPalace. This film production, which is in four reels, is from the book by Harold McGrath. An 'sir of mystery pervades the story, which makes it very deep and most interesting. "A veil masked her face—a veil she would not lift, despite his entreaties. Then she left him unhappy. But the lure of the mask was strong, and it called him away from far-away Venice, and sang its way to his heart, and then he found that the girl was " well. to say any more would spoil your pleasure. You must sec the film to-night for the solution. The story has a surprising denonment, and the acting throughout of Harold Lockwood and Elsie Wilson reaches a very high level. Tn support are the "Topical War Budget," "Srinagar, Capital of Cashmere," and a couple of ripping comedies.
