•Mr. John Watson Walker, known 14. mining circles as "Long Drive Walked, * , died at Remuera, Auckland, last Thurf* 1 day; in liis 89th year. He gained nickname as the contractor for the long, Monataiari drive at Thames, and he had ■ ! been connected with the New Zealand goldfielda for nearly fifty years. A na- j tive of Aberdeen, Scotland, he camie out to Victoria in 1849, two years before the opening of the goldfiehls there. He wa» j at the first "rush" of the Turon Rivet-' in 1869. He came to the Thames district J'! in New Zealand under an arrangement 'i to report on the mines, and was after* | wards induced to take charge of tho ] "Long Drive" mine. Mr. Walker wm j subsequently in chargo. of the Kurannt j Hill mine, and he then went to Reefton ' for tho Bank of Xew Zealand..
