BOROUGH COUNCIL.

THE MANGAMAHOE DAM. NEW WORKS TO BE DONE. ... The adjourned meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess), and Crs. L. M. Monteath, J. S. S. Medley, J. Hayden, F. E. Wilson, A. H. Johnstone, W. A. Collis, W. F. Short, F. J. Hill, S. ,7. Smith, J. T. Mannix, and A. E. Watkins. The Electric Light Committee recommended: (1) That the Council call for tenders for additional spillway at the Mangamahoe Dam; (2) that the borough engineer be instructed to prepare an estimate for a sliding gate at the dam; (3) that the borough engineer be instructed to put the three gates at entrance to the race on the Waiwakaiho River in working order to protect high boulder bank at entrance to race, and place bars across the race as recommended by him. Cr. Monteath moved the adoption of the report, and the Mayor seconded. Cr. Smith considered the best possible expert advise should be received before anything was done, and he moved than an outside engineer should be appointed to report on the work. Cr. Short seconded, the amendment. Cr. Morteath opposed the amendment. This was a report of the Electric Light Committee, of which Cr. Smith was a member, but it was true that Cr. Smith was not present when this particular report was made. The matter had been fully discussed by the committee, and had been before the Council. He did not object to an outside report being received, but he did not think anything would be gained by this, and the work should be done as soon as possible, I>ut, if the amendment was carried, it would be delayed. Cr. Collis also opposed the amendment for similar reasons. The Mayor did not feel that the work should be stopped now, especially since the engineer had stressed its urgency. Cr. Short thought that an outßide engineer's opinion should be received on this and many other matters. The amendment was lost, and the report was adopted.
