Joy, who shot the accountant of the Ararat Bank, arrived at the bank armed with a double-barrelled gun, a revolver and a long knife. He presented a 4oz. nugget, and after, when he had been informed that 'the practice was to pay in notes he, without warning, began shooting. Demully was shot when reaching for his revolver, and pluckily used his uninjured hand when firing at his assailant. Constable Graham commandeered the trap of a civilian named Moorfoot and chased Joy, who opened fire on their approach and wounded Graham and Moorfoot in the legs. Taking advantage of the misfire of a cartridge. Graham rushed and knocked out Joy with the butt of his revolver.
