WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent). A large number of natives from the surrounding district and Wanganui are congregating at Waitara to pay their respects to their late chief. YYaata Hipango, and it is expected that there will lie a few hundred odd in this town for a week or two. The Maoris arc encamped on a small portion of ground adjacent to the late chief's homestead, situated within the borough, and witli the health of the town at heart it would be advisable if the Health Department tr-ok immediate stops to see that sanitary arrangements, etc., are being properly tarried out. A few porpoises—thought to he sharks —were fiecn close to the beach last Sunday, and caused a number of those disporting in the surf temporary uneasiness. The tourist ticket art union was drawn at the Xorth Taranaki Patriotic League's meeting on Monday, the winner being Mr. 11. Glentwort.li, of Urenui. The gross takings amounted to £3l 4s. The sum of £1 for the Wounded Soldier's Fund was received from Mrs. S. Whitehead, of Mokau.
