STRATFORD NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Yesterday. Mr. Fred Bayly. .a well-known Tututawa settler, hud tlie misfortune to have a serious fall, resulting in breaking his leg. A light bree?.o passed over the proceedings of the Stratford County Council yesterday, through Cr. Smith again indulging 111 some several criticisms of the contracts arranged by the enginer. Other councillors reprimanded their colleague his action, and appealed to him "to be a man, be staiglit, and do the right thing." The engineer thought Cr Smith wa? most unfair in his criticism, for lie was surely not to be blamed for past actions of t'ne Council. He gave an explanation of different contracts, showing that his estimates were i-orreet, mid he had not used any slipshod methods as suggested. Chairman: Are you satisfied, Cr. Smith 1 Cr. Smith: 2\o; it is not satisfactory, I have lost all confidence in the engineer. Cr. Were: We knew that long ago.
Mr. W. Stoc-k', of Toko, while taking a horse out of a dray had the misfortune to be kicked with the result that a broken arm. Under medical advice he was conveyed to the Stratford hospital. At the Stratford County Council meeting, Mr. Robert Spence, the Council's solicitor said ho had just received word, ■mollicially, that he would be called to so into training for the front next month. He thanked Ilio Council for thcil* courtesy, and hoped to return and see them all again. The chairman congratulated Mr. Spence upon enlisting, and expressed the wishes of the whole Council that Mr. .Spence would return safe aud sound.
