The Wellington oarrespondent of the Wanganni Chronicle says that Sir Francis Bell is to jo Home as successor to the late Sir Joshua Willia*s is accepted as a settled thing. Mrs. P. G, Evans, of New Plymouth, has received a cable from Archieacon Evans, at Cairo, who went away as chaplain on the liOßpital ship Maheno, saying, "Well. Returning Monday." Mr. F. G. Matthews, private secretary to the Minister for Defence, will enter camp this week with the infantry ti.c.o.'s of the 16th Reinforcements. Mr. Matthews was assistant-private secretary to the late Mr. Seddon and also to Sir Joseph Ward. News has been received in Wellington that Lieutenant Gladstone Ward, son ot the Right Hon. Sir Joseph Ward, has received his full lieutenant's commission. Lieutenant Ward went to England last year and secured appointment as a second lieutenant in the transport service. The Rev. Dr. Cleray, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, has been an inmate or" the Mater Misericordiae Hospital at Mt. Kden since Thursday last. A successful 'operation was performed last Friday to remove the cause of a trouble that for months past has considerably retarded the patient's convalescence. The Bishop is now making satisfactory progress, and his medical advisers are confident of his general health being considerably improved.
