A minor racing disturbance—the Nelson Racing Club's autumn meeting opens to-day, and will be concluded to-morrow. Gallops and trots make up the programme, and while a wise man would wring his hands and plead "not guilty" to the trots, the same wise man might not be above remarking that the gallopers—Rongora, Heather, Louvaine, Totaranui, and Need should show up at the gathering. Amata, winner of the ■ Newmarket Handicap, is a •five-year-old bay mare by Wallace—Carissima, and recent 'Stralian Hies, despite her recent winning form and good track work, gave her little chance'. Quite recently she defeated Woorak in the Hawksburn Handicap (six furlongs), in 1.134, winning in fine style. Some papers even went so far as to dub her a dqubtful starter! Martial Air, who figures in the Maiden at Nelson, is not eligible to start, that event being for horses that have not won a race of 25 sovs at time of starting. Most sports who witnessed the racing at Dannevirke reckon that Indigo was very unlucky to get beaten in the Cup. The Croesus appeal has now been finally settled, the Hawke's Bay Club's original set of disqualifications being approved of. If all they say is correct the Appeal Judges' decision is not to be wondered at. King Chiara was a runner in the Te Aroha Cup, but ran badly. He is "dead stale" now, and wants a spell. J. O'Shea further increased his lead at Te Aroha on Saturday, winning two races, while Benjamin Deeley, Esq., could only reply with a single. Eoy Reed notched a brace. The Ruakaka Hurdles at Te Aroha was nothing but a chapter of accidents. Brookfield fell at the first fence, and Lismore did ditto at the stand. Lady Lobelia and Gwalior then sorted themselves out, but both came down at the last fence through racing for a gap, and Doggerbank turned turtle over them. Then old Crispeen, who had been toiling in the rear, was left in front, and stayed there to the end, thus proving the old adage, "The last shall be first, and the first shall bo down the straight!" Otherwise there was nothing startling about the racing at Te Aroha, Glendina (Goldfinch) took the Trial Handicap; Olenspire (Deeley), the Domain Handicap; Soldier (R. Eeed), the Cup; Lightning (R, Reed), the Flying; Parsimony (Robinson), the Gordon Hack Handicap; Achilledes (O'Shea), the Welter; and Signo (O'Shea)," the Tourists' Handicap. There it is in a nutshell, but how "decent" it would have been if we'd known on Friday! Francis Foy, who was a runner in the St. Leger at Flemington is a New Zea-land-bred eolt by Vasco—Madder. But what chance had he with the Melbourne Cup winner, Patrobas, at level weights. La Carabine, who defeated Advance once or twice over long distances, died recently in 'Stralia. The writer had a look round the Bulls racecourse yesterday. Mr. Ernie Morse has everything in splendid order, the racing track being nicely coated with fine grass and the going good. Whether or not rain falls between now and the day of the meeting there will be no jar in the main track. A big meeting is anticipated. Trainer J. Coylc, who has five of Mr. H. McManaway's horses in work at Bulls, joined the ranks of the benedicts on Monday. Goo' luck! Trainer A. Wright has removed from Foxton to Bulls, and has five horses in work. Maniaroa is looking well, but he had a close call recently. Snapping at a fly, he got the stirrup fixed in his mouth, but, fortunately, help wis at hand promptly, and after cutting the stirrup leather much difficulty wa« experienced in sawing the iron out of his mouth. The Rover looks well for a horse of his age. An exchange slips rather a good yarn about some jocksters who were getting "fed up" with the crook tucker at a North Island hotel. The climav came when the steak that was served up proclaimed pungently its antiquity. The boss was called in, and after sniffing loudly remarktd, "Oh! That's nothing. It's only on the turn." "On the t'.ni be blanked," screamed a "why, its half way up the blanky straight!"
