At Stratford last Tuesday a fine line of five hundred shorn hmbs. from Mr. (!. A. Mnrchant's Stanley road property, realised what is believed to be the record price of 16s 2d per head. Thin is the more noteworthy cs a large percentage of the best ewes were reserved hy Mr. Marchant for his own flock. A section of enlightened New Plymouth residents years ago strove hard to move the Government to proclaim the incomparable banks of the Mokau river a scenic reserve. They met with considerable opposition, and whilst the Government was making up its mind, land, syndicates and st'hers who had taken up blocks of land served by the river were busy with tin axe falling the bush that had taken eentr.ries to grsw. ■Eventually the Government issued the pioclamation and reserved much of the bush that was left. Ons of the arguments advanced by the New Plymouth party was that it-was in the interests of the owners themselves that the bush from the water's edge to ■'-the sky-line should he left intact, as if the bush were fallen slips would occur, owing to the papa formation of the country, and the fallen timber be swept by freshes into the river channel, thus impeding, if not blocking, navigation. The truth of that prediction is strikingly brsught home to anyone who has visited the river lately. It is full of floating, half■submerged and fully-submerged logs. ■Steamer traffic is now out of the question, and it is with difficulty that a launch threads its way through the field of timber. It may be added that the landowners up the river are now petitioning t'hp Government for assistance towards snagging the river, a work which could have been avoided had they heeded the disinterested advice tendered at the time.
