The Times' correspondent in New York says it has transpired that Count Bernstorff's fcutlcr was among the waiters at the Gridiron Club dinner on Saturday, when President Wilson made an important pronouncement. The club functions are usually strictly private. Count Bernstorff was not aware that this dinner was a departure from the rule and therefore it is believed sent his butler to spy. ; ARMED MERCHANTMEN. Washington, March 3. Britain has informed Mr. Lansing that the affidavits are obviously false as a ■aval patrol sank Schneider's XJ27 immediately after the Arabic sank.
