CARRINGTON ROAD.

(From Our Otv* Correspondent.) Qiiiie a large number of pcoplf still eontinue to hold picnics in the vicinity of lower and particularly upper Carrington TJpjd, and the countryside dur'n? Sundays and holidays presents quite a busy aspect. This has been a record season fnr hlackherrv nicker)!, who are no doubt taking full advantage of Nature's gift harvest at a time when living is f o high. A very enjoyable function was held in the local schoolroom on Tuesday evening last, tlie occasim being a farwell to Corporal Sptnce. Privates H. Groolv, L. Oreolv and A. Phillips who are at present en final leave. Mr. Okey, in making t.h» presentation of fountain pens, emphasised the importance of every Available man enlisting at once; while there was still an opportunity to do so of their own free will, and'not wait until CMf.cript.ion' forced t.hcm to realise their responsibility lo their Kin* and country. 'He wished them to re* member that the soldier who fights of his own free will invariably makes the better filter of the two. The following i s a list of names of those who have be:'n farewelled and are now serving at the front:-Lieutenant c, Silbert, Private .T. Shaw, H. Shaw. B. Leighton, H. Leighf.on, C. Boswell, H. Rider, L. Silbert. R. Okey. L. Okey E Beauchamn. C. Pctcli, andTaylor. The, children attending the Carrington Schol certainly deserve very great praise for the manner in which "they arc at present giving un much of their leisure time to beautifying the grounds, which are indeed a credit to the children and distict. A splendid working spirit now prevails. Of the three children who sat for the Proficiency examination this year, TCdith Taylor and Wilfred Taylor pained certificates of proficiency, and Olga, Beauchamp a certificate of competency. The following also gained good attendance certificates. Ronald Silbert, Newton Derby. Kenneth Rawlinson. Charles Whittle, Doris Whittle and Daisy Cole. A meeting will he held at Upper M.ingorei on Tuesday evening (7th inst), when final arrangements will be made for the school children's seaside picnic, which is to he held at East End beach about March fi. Tt is passible that Upper and I.ower Mangorei, Carrin®ton, and Patua Schools will unite in iTn endeavor lo make the occasion a. sut-ce-;-ttil r.ne. -Mr . fhe overseer fit (ho oil br.'-e nearby, is making 'rapid progress with the building and setting down of machinery. The work is now nearing completion, and it is expected that boring will commence early in May. Mr. Hadley spares no pains in his endeavor to make his. employees comfortable. The workers' residence, which is quite a fine looking structure, and which is large enough to accommodate fourteen men, i s fitted up with electric light and a hot and cold water supply. A large engineering shed has also been erected and a plant is being set in so that all engineering work may be attended to at the oil works.

I recently pai da visit to the Frankley Cross Road Cheese Factory, and was struck by, the cleanly condition of the surroundings and the number of alterations that have been been effected lately. The manager has for some time been turning out whey butter, which has necessitated the setting in of h B-h.p. Tangey steam engine, a Topless Combine Churn, a Unique Pump, and an Alfa-Laval Separator. All this machinery was set in by"the manager, v/lio received no momentary recompense for his labor. One of the grading certificates which I consider highly creditable showed the following mark's (the total being given in parenthesis)— Flavor (50) 40, body texture (30) 2SJ, color (15) 14J, finish (5) 5; total (100) 04. The manager, Mr. W. Waswo, certainly deserves very great credit for the splendid manner in which he has attended to his duties during his term of office, the factory having reached a state of proficiency that has caused it to rank among the best factories of the Dominion.
