To Aroha races to-day. Opunake acceptances are due on Monday. Bairnsdale, who won at Dannevirke, is said to be very sliek. Kewi Poto was only narrowly defeated at Dannevirke when paying a great price. It is not often that >a horse wins the first and the third race »n the. programme, but that is what Martial Ail did on Thursday. The Avon Park party were "carpeted'' on the opening day "t Dannevirke, and when they punted on the second day they got baafy stouslied, which was only adding insult to injury! Rongora cannot be the champion some of the "hard heads" reckon. He was a "hot orange" each day at Dannevirke, but failed badly. These "hard heads" will be "hari-up heads" if they don't "tumble" soon. After running second on Wednesday, Indigo looked a good bet for the Autumn Handicap the next day, and the healthy dividend he paid caused consternation in the Bar Von's camp. He would only require to be half well to lick that team. Several heavily backed horses missed at Wanganni through stirrup-leathers, girths, etc., breaking. Accidents may happen to anyone, but it is generally the slrusrgling owner's gear which is at fault. Last week it was the rich man's gear that kept bursting, and the stipes would have done well if they had examined the straps and leathers wliex the heiscs returned to the birdcage. It is nowhere near the end of the racing seasan, hut Tcte-aTeto's victory in the Jackson Stakes on Saturday last hoisted Mr. T. TI. Lowry's winnings to ! £12,580, which knocks out the previous record of £12,.125 standng to the late G. G. Stead's credit. With ordinary luck Desert Gold. Tete-aTete and Egypt, shsuLl win much mor a money for Mr. Lowry before the curtain i« rung down. At the Wanganui bloodstcck sales recently fcfsd prices were got for hclf a dozen of the progeny cf Signor, prices averaging 100 gns. A chestnut filly, full s:,ster to Welcome Nnsget, was bought by Mr. R. A. McKen/i- for 101 guineas, and a b"Own gsldinj by Signor —Armistice fell to Mr. .1. Ayre's bid at 125 guineas. Both are two-year-olds. Waiotere, who is owned in this province, is getting through good work at Awapuni under .1. Hathaway's care. She is to be put to the jumping business. Splendid entries have been received for all events at the Rangitikci annual meeting. The principal events on the opening day have filled as follow:Rangitikci Cup. One and a quarter miles.—Ladify, F.l Hallo. Master Lupin, Imarose, Byron, Rewi Poto, Ineuru, Goldstream, Miralma. Square Deal, Crawford, .Play Off, King Chiara, Black Ada, Combustion. Sedd-ul Bahr, Zetcs, Tangihou, Lady Nolan, Leonta, Master Moutoa, Maniaroa, Princess Moutoa, Carnpeador. Scott Memorial-Handicap. Six furlongs. —Avon Park, Lady Middleton, Lady Louisa, Watchful, Denise Orme, Depredation, Limpet. Mount Victoria, Black Ada, Pariform, Zetes, Vladineau, Calais, Kaniki, Downham, Heather. In the minor events, Taranaki stables are strongly represented, those entered including Golden Grafton, Madame Ristori, Nita, Durane, Paraoa, Analogue, Coropet, Waioture, Slons's Sa? s !^?^?*
Veto, Dood, Ayoii Park, King Chiara, Ineuru, Crawford, Patronale, Martingale, Avena, etc. Several promising aspirants to the hurdling game will probably make their debut over battens at Bulls. They include Kooya, Vestalis and Austin. ;. Rewi Poto has been handicappod up to his best form in the Napier Cup. With 8.11, against his name he is put within 31bs of Indigo, and marvellous as it may seem—on the same mark as such a good one as Eligible! There were some great dividends paid by winners at the Wanganui trots, "twenties" being as common as infantile paralysis. The crowd of punters had a shocking time of it, and not oven the Garrison Band's fortissimo could drown •the IIOWI9 of dismay as favorite after favorite was "downed" on the first day. On Monday, things went slightly better for the betting public, but those who don't follow this branch of sport must have had a yery rocky time. Word comes from Australia that Newhaven, who won the Melbourne Jpup and V.R.C. Derby nineteen years ago, was recently disposed of for 20 guineas. The son of Newminster—Oceana was tried at Home, where ne won races, but his pedigree was nof without blemish, and he found his way back to Orange (N.S.W.), where the sale .mentioned above was recently recorded. Week-End hus broken down rather badly, the trouble being in her knees. The English-bred Ally is to be turned out for a month or two, when she will be brought in with a. view to winter racing. Many who were present at the Woodville meeting called on F. Davis to have a look at Desert Odd. The champion is said to ke looking bright and well, and all continuing so in the meantime she will be produced in the New Zealand St. Leger at Trentham on April 6th, and in the Gold Cup two days later. The Awapunl Gold Cup is her next engagement, and it takes place a week after Trentham. It is quite on the cards that Panmure will oppose the filly in one of her Awapuni engagements. Aeroplane, by Stepniak—Ventalera, won the Miller Stakes at the Tasmaninn Racing Club's meeting on February 11th. Tasman's Isle, the Derby winner, was a runner, but broke down some distance from borae. A half-brother U Aeroplane, by Sarto, was purchased at the sale of the Warrington yearlings at Dunedin l»st Friday by the Winton trainer, P. T. Hogan, for 42 guineas. At the meeting mentioned, Gangway, by Castaghore—Stephanie (therefore halfbrother to Zeus), won tht Hurdle Race.
