NEW PLYMOUTH-ONEHUNGA SERVICE.
SARAWA MAY BE TAKEN OFF. It has been freely rumored for some, time pust that the Karawa was to lie taken o(T the New Plymoutli-Onehunga service. The Taranaki Chamber of Commerce made inquiries in the matter, and in reply received a letter from the general manager of the Northern Steamship Company stating that although the opening of the Main Trunk railway six years ago seriQiislv diminished the passenger traffic the Rarawa had been kept in the trade, which, notwithstanding every effort to foster it, had been carried on at a loss. Accommodation was provided for 149 passengers, but during the last twelve months the average number per trip had been barely ,"ifl. The letter added that if there were no indications of improvement the question of putting on a smaller steamer would have •to be considered.
