Mr. F. Hyman, general manager of the Lyttelton Times Company, is, with Mrs. Hyman, on a brief holiday to New Plymouth. Word has just been received that Sergeant Cecil Allison, of Manaia, has received a lieutenant's commission for gallantry in the field. . Mr. F. W. Q. McLeod, formerly of Mastcrton, but now of Ipswich, Queensland, who has been appointed bandmaster of the New 'Plymouth Citizens' Band, expects to leave Australia for New Zealand next week. Mr. A. H. Osborne, who has been on the New Plymouth staff of the New Zealand Insurance Company, Ltd., has received advice of his promotion to the position of chief clerk at Invercargill, and leaves for his new position towards the middle of the menth. Sir Edward Grey is fast creating a record. If he remains Foreign Secretary till the middle of June next lie will have been Foreign Secretary for a longer consecutive period than any other British statesman for over a century. At present the record tenure k that of Lord Castlereagh, who held the office for 10 years and 23 weeks. Privates H. E. Morris and Frank Cowling, of the 10th Reinforcements, who are home on leave, were entertained at a largely attended social at Oakura on Tuesday evening and were each presented with a wristlet'watch. Captain Mace, N.Z.C., a veteran and the oldest inhabitant of the district, made the presentation. Sergt. G. F. Bertrand, who is returning to New Zealand to receive a commission, is a son of Mr. Geo. Bertrcnd, of Urenui. He is well known in New Plymouth a s a school teacher, and was un assistant at the Central School when he enlisted with the Main Body. He was prominent in football circles as a member of the Star and Clifton Clubs, and he also represented Taranaki with distinction. The Hon. Captain W. D. H. Baillie, M.L.C., celebrated his ninetieth birthday lust week. Captain Baillie was born in Brunswick, Canada, on February 22, 1527, and entered the Army ai an ensign at the age of nineteen years. After serving in India he came to New Zealand in the ship Oriental in 1857 and took up a farm at Wairau. Ho became a member of the Marlborough Provincial Council in 1861 and was called to the Legislative Council in that vear.
Advice was received yesterday afternoon by Mr. W. T. Jennings, JI.P., stating that all hope was abandoned in regard to Lieutenant Harold Jennings, KF.A. Tie is the eldest son of the member for Tanmariinui, and left New Plymouth a little over five years ago for London, lie was employed in the local branch of'the Bank of Xow Zealand, and look part in local amateur operatic efforts. Tn London he was engaged in the National Bank of 'New Zealand, and from there he proceeded to Buenos Ayres, where lie was employed for two years in the British South American Bank. At tin- outbreak of war he and two other friends proceeded to London, whore they joined the London Scottish. Harold Jennings later obtained a lieutenancy in the Nova! I'ichl Artillery, and took "part in the great advance on Loos on September is. where lie was wounded. After convalescence lie was sent for light duty 1.0 Atlilone (Iveland), where he contract. e<i enteric fever about three weeks ago. Lieutenant Jennings was born in Auckland, and was a pupil of St. Patrick's College. Wellington. Lieut. Jennings met his brother, Sergeant Alf. Jennings, in London in December.
