j FROM WESTERN FRONT. ITALIAN AND AUSTRIAN DUELS. Received Feb. 29, 9.30 p.m. London, Feb. 28. A Berlin communique claims a gain on a front of 1000 yards at Navarin farm, and to have captured 1000 prisoners, a mortar, and nine machine-guns. General Sir Douglas Haig reports: We repulsed a small attack south-east of Albert. The enemy during the night sprang a mine at La Bassee Canal, doing seme damage to our trenches. Received Feb. 29, 10.55 p.m. Rome, Feb. 29. A communique says: There arc intense artillery duels at Plez/.o basin, on Mount Kuk. One of our batteries wrecked the enemy entrenchments, forcing a retreat, Wellington, Last Night. The High Commissioner reports: London, February 2!), 11.53 a.m..—The French heavy artillery shelled the enemy transport routes in the region of Wood Choppy. 'We exploded a mine at Hill 280 and now occupy the crater. North of Verdun artillery activity continues. The Germans attempted several attacks, which were disorganised and repulsed by our fire and counter-attacks. West of Fort Douaumont the French are engaged in hand-to-hand fighting. They expelled the enemy from the redoubt they had succeeded in occupying. At Woevre attacks on the French completely failed.
