Lance-Corporal W. S. Sta»ners, of the Ist Reserve Company, son of Mr. H. Stanners, of Eltham, hag been promoted to Sergeant. It is reported in Auckland Masonic circle that Mr. Oliver Nicholson is the chosen candidate for the office of Grand Master of New Zealand, and will be installed at the annual communication of Grand Lodge to be held at the Auckland Town Hall on May 10. Mr. John Cheeseinan, Chief Signal Inspector, who is retiring from the Government railway service on superannuation, was farewelled by a representative gathering of railway employees (signalling branch) last week, and presented by Mr. H. J. Wynne, Signal Electrical Engineer, on behalf of the New Zealand staff, with an illuminated address and purse of sovereigns. The death occurred at New Plymouth early yesterday morning of Mr. A. E. Bullock, after a long and painful illness.borne with remarkable fortitude. The late Mr. Bullock was a member of Messrs Weston and Weston's stall some years ago, and during his stay in this town became well-known in athletic circles. He afterwards practised at Wanganui as a member of the firm of Bullock, Currie and Douglas, but a. serious breakdown in health compelled him to forsake the legal profession for an outdoor life, and he took up farming in the Purangi district. Recovering his health somewhat he came to New Plymouth some eight months ago and entered into practice with Mr. A. R. Standish. Unfortunately, he suffered a relapse after only a month or so, and since then had been confined to his bed, the illness which was of a lingering nature, proving fatal yesterday. He leaves a widow and four little children. Under the roll gf honor list issued recently by the Base Records Office appears the following—Drowned. N.Z. Rie Brigade. Moore, —Rifleman, Sonny ■Joseph (No. 25/1098). Next of kin, Mrs. L. Hansbery, Fulford Street, New Plymouth (sister). (Lost overboard from N.Z. transport en route to Albany, February 13th). The deceased soldier was born in New Plymouth about 37 years ago, and was the youngest son of the late Martin Moore, a Crimean veteran, and one of the 57th Regiment (better known as the "Diehards"), which also served in India at the time of the mutiny and took part in the first Maori war. Rifleman Moore enlisted in the Hawke's Bay province in September last as one of Lord Liverpool's Own Rifle Brigade, and left New Zealand recftnllj in one of the troopships as transport driver.
