The official who was responsible for the laying out of the track, and indeed for the whole ground, was Lieut. Jack Ha.ll, Auckland and North Island, representative footballer, Hc took' a keen interest in tie sports,: which, deipite the fact that camp dv.iies prevented a lot from attending, were a "If you look down'the lis£ if results you will see the names of a number of well-known New Zealand athletes, such as Byrne, Wellington provincial halfmile and three-miles champion and winner of New Zealand half-mile championship last year; Heley, Wellington representative footballer and Wellington 100 and 200 yards provincial champion. La Roche is well-known ifi Wairarapa as a 440 yards and 'half-mile runner, as is Fordham in Auckland; French is the New Zealand Maori forward, and Lieut. George Strach is a Wellington representative at hockey.
