FRENCH RED CROSS.
AN APPEAL IN NEW PLYMOUTH. , TO-DAY'S COLLECTIONS. To-day the people of New Plymouth will be asked to give substantial financial support for the French Red Cross. The Mayor C. IT. Burgess) and Mrs. Burgess have started the fund with a donation of £lO, and this was further increased by donations from the takings at the Empire Theatre and the Theatre Royal last night. Mrs. Dockrill has also received from Mrs, A. Crooke the sum of £1 10s, being the proceeds of a collection taken up in aid of the fund at the North Egmont Mountain House. The principal opportunity for helping to-day will be afforded by the collectors. This morning a house-to-house canvass will be made and a large force of ladies will visit every lioiiie in the town and snburbs. At 0 a.m., a number of ladies will take up positions in the centre of the town, and they will be relieved at 1 p.m. by other ladies, who will continue the collecting until <i p.m. j THE FISH MART. In addition to this French flags will be on sale during the day, while in the afternoon all the takings at the Marble Bar will be given to the fund. The proprietors of the People's Pictures have also consented to give a portion of their profits to-day. Complete arrangements have been made by the promoters of the Red Cross Fish Mart to sell fish in town during the morning, all the takgoing to the fund. Generous portions of their "catches" will be given by all the local fishermen, and in addition amateur fishermen will go out in the early hours of this morning. It is hoped to receive tho first supply of fish between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m., and it will be on sale in Devon street.
VEGETABLES AXD MEAT. Mr. Maunder, of We?town, lias donated four sheep to be sold at the Haymarket to-day, and this should prove a good opportunity for the farmers to contribute. Also the committee of the Red Cross Market have decided to give the takings at the market to-day. The committee hope the public will help this good cause by sending contributions and by coming to the market to buy. A novel guessing competition will be provided through the generosity of Messrs Sole Bros., who have offered a quarter of beef for a weight-guessing competition. The beef wil] be hung at Messrs Sole's shop in Devon street, and tickets will be sold at a shilling each. Generous prizes will be awarded as follows: First four, each a leg of lamb; next four, each a loin of lamb; next eight, a portion of lamb of the value of 2s (id. Arrangements have been made that if the prize-winners have ordered their meat for to-day they can take their larftb an}* time next week. Mr, J. R. Hill and a returned soldier will be in charge of the competition, which should produce ,a good sum for the fund. Tickets will be obtainable from 9 a.m. to 9.30 p.m.
