AUSTRALIAN PREMIER, JOINS CANADIAN CABINET THE NEED FOR COMPULSION. Ottawa, Feb. 20. Mr. Hughes, the Australian Prime Minister, was sworn in as a.member of tlie Canadian Privy Council, and attended a Cabinet meeting at which Imperial affairs were discussed. The press suggests that the precedent ought to be followed everywhere in tlie dominions, the Premiers being ex-offlcio members. Mr. Hughes, speaking at the Canadian Club, said that preparedness for compulsory service was essential for the security of any free people who desired to retain their freedom. The Australians valued democracy and liberty and were ready to fight to their last man, though they could have purchased an ignoble peace with the Germans. Germany was prepared to treat the Canadians as an independent nation and confer a like favor on Australia. She now knew she was fighting England and men of resolution. The British dominions would not quit while life remained.
