TRADE WITH CANADA.
REMARKABLE EXPANSION. IMPORTS AND FIGURES. PAST SIX YEARS' FIGURES. The expansion of trade between Canada and New Zealand as the result of the stimulating effect of the war was referred to by Mr. \Y. A. Beddoe, Canadian Trade Commissioner, yesterday. During the year, 1915, he said, the value of the imports into' New Zealand from Canada was £797,810. In tlje previous year the value of the imports was £479,140. Thus the increase, for 1915 over 1914 was £3lS,67fi. This advance is not only the largest recorded in the Jtistory of the commercial relations between the two countries, but is larger .than the total imports five years ago. The following table illustrates the increase in the imports from Canada during the last six years:— £ 1910 .-.-.. r..-...%.-.... 2(11.492 1911 •. 283,410 1912 393,249 1913 452,519 1914 ........ 479,140 1915 : 797,51G Trade was largely stimulated, continued Mr. Beddoe, by reason of the fact that between Canada and New Zealand there existed a reciprocal preferential tariff. Another reason was the establishment of a. service of subsidised steamers. The exports from New Zealand to Canada are largely in excess of the imports from Canada to New Zealand. The following table shows the value of the exports from New Zealand to Canada during the last six years:— £ 1910 100,182 1911 199.557 1912 542,271 1913 000.002 1914 595,011 1915 925,823 The exports from New Zealand to Canada for the year 1915 thus exceeded the exports of the previous vear by ■ £330.212. The total value of the trade between the two countries for 1915 amounted to £1,723,039, whereas the total value for 1910 was £422,244, an increase since 1910 of £1,301,395. "Previous to the war," said Mr. Beddoe. "New Zealand paid to Germany £2OOO a day: now she pays practically nothing. A proportion of this business has been secured by Canada, but Canada suffers, as other manufacturing centres in the British Umpire suffer, from an excess of orders and a limited capacity for production. After the war we must arrange to deal firstly within the Empire, and secondly with the Allies."
