WAITARA.
THE PATRIOTIC CARNIVAL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Saturday. A large number of people congregated on the (.'amp Resene grounds yesterday afternoon and evening 1o witness and take part in the second stage of the patriotic Carnival. The total takings up to last evening amounted to £2">S. Yesterday afternoon's programme included l mining events, horse leaping, tilting at the ring, and numerous other events, the results of which are as follow: 75 Yards Flat Race (open).—D. Tate 1, J. Knuckey 2, Reg. Sampson 3. Egg and Spoon Race.—Les. Sampson 1, Yv'm. Crow 2. Wheelbarrow Race.—Abbott and D. Tate 1, McLean and Kvle 2. Three-Legged Race.—Abbott and I). Tate 1, R. Tate and V. Tate 2. Maiden Jump (horses).—X. TeppereU's Nestor 1, Stockman's Nelly 2. Open Jump (horses).—N. Pepporell's Nestor 1, Stockman's Black Jack 2. Open Flat Race, 100 yards—Les. Sampson 1, J. Knuckey 2, J).' Tate 3. Old Men's Race. 50' yark—A. Crawford 1, R. Tnte 2. H. Abbott 3. Peg Bonding (horseback). —Xortheote 1, L. Jennings 2. Blindfold Drive.—.l. Slight and Miss Harlin 1, Miss L. Klcnner and D. Tale 2. Tent Pegging.—D. Stockman 1, R. Pennington 2. Tilting in Ring.—Stockman 1, R. Pennington 2. Married Ladies' Race.—Mrs. Johnston 1, Mrs, Anderson 2. During the evening numerous entertainments were given in the ''Opera House" every half-hour. Pictures and other side-shows, interspersed with items by the band and dancing on the green, completed the evening entertainment. This afternoon's programme consisted of a fancy dress cricket match, relay races, tug of wars, and Swedish drill. The Waihi children's Swedish drill display was very creditable, and tliey were deservedly awarded the firs! prize, with Miss Cocker's (Waitara) team second. The Relay Race was very keenly contested and was won by the Central School (New Plymouth), Ywiitara School being second. Some very strenuous pulls took place in the tug of war. which was finally won by the Waitara School team. This evening's entertainment will consist of numerous sideshows, musical items by the band, dancing on the green, and the great "Battle cf the Confetti" will close the. Carnival. !
