TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") This week's Taranaki meeting was one of the most enjoyable of the many successful Cup gatherings held on the local course. Not only were weather conditions ideal, but the fields were large and the racing wag probably the best ever seen on the local course. The result must be very gratifying to the Club's officials, who all worked hard to make the gathering a success. Nowadays nothing but the best will suit Taranaki, and the club has not only a splendid course, but from handicapper down to band everything is of the best. Mr. f». Morse's adjustments produced good sport, and favorites had a bad run during the meeting, not a single first favorite scoring 011 the opening day, while Emperador and King Chiara were the only favorites to wjn on Thursday. Mr. 0. O'Connor started well, and Mr." W. H. Hartgill made no mistake in the judge's box. Tile presence of the Wanganui Garrison Band, winners of the Ballarat contest, etc., added a musical treat which was immensely appreciated. The totalisator turnover allowed an increase of just over a thousand pounds, which was very satisfactory. Although not a great betting race the Taranaki Stakes once again justified its inclusion in the programme. It was a great sight to see Kmperador, Bimeter and Flying Start, in action, and the finish was one that would arouse the enthusiasm of a parson. The principal long-distance handicaps resulted in surprises, Self (whose party preferred her chance to that of her stable-mate. Merry Roe) and Housewife (another little fancied Auoklatuler) getting home by narrow margins. Self contested a sprint event at Hawera last week, finishing a good fourth, but Housewife, who could not head a tortoise in the Timaru Hack Handicap here 011 Wednesday, set followers of form a nice conundrum when she bowled home in the van in the Paul Memorial Handicap the following day. This is the first race Housewife has won, and those who "knew she would win"—as they always know after the race—just about beat the band!

The open sprints saw hot favorites "downed" one alter another. Battle Eve gave a taste of his old form i:i the Stewards' Handicap, and there is a good vace concealed in him yet. Avon Park, who is proving a gold mine to just scraped home in the Flying: Tree Lucerne scored an overdue win in the (handstand Handicap, and Recorder showed a glimpse nf her Southern form in the Farewell. They were a good lot of sprinters, but some of them were looking-tired on Thursday. Collector won both stick events rather easily. Traill, who took off both hurdle races at flawera with Florist, rode Collector on Wednesday, but, unfortunately for him, he was not available on the second day. being previously engaged to ride Florist. Yladian and Scrutineer showed fair form, and may be seen to greater advantage at the Waugnmii meeting. Ticino (Danube—lnvala), tl'e winner of the Hack Scurry on the second day of the local meeting, is the first of Danube's progeny to get on the winning list. Previously, Ticino carried Mr. (i. D. Greenwood's colors, but was subsequently bought liy the local trainer, R. Harlow, for a (patron of his stable. 'Mr. W. Honeyfield. Bob Barlow was heartily' congratulated after the. race for the good judgment he. showed in securing the bay gelding, who, judging by the manner •in which he won is likely :to turn out a very profitable investment. New Plymouth-trained horses scored fairly well in the minor events, King Chiara pulling off a double, and Pate(onga also winning a heat. These horses were heavily backed away from the course on Wednesday, and the good prices they paid came as a surprise. Thoolomi, who won the Mimi Welter rather nicely, is an Australian bred gelding by the Melbourne Cup winner Poseidon, and should turn out a fair horse. Veto beat him on the second day. but that was. mainly owing to Harold Young slipping the field in the early stages. Ticino. who could not win a race for Mr. fi. D. Greenwood, scored at the first time of asking in Mr. W. Honeyfield's colors.

Winning riders at the meeting were: A. Reed (3), W. Young (2), and L. Traill, W. Bell, J. O'Shea, Thompson, O. McCarten, R. Kelly, C. Emerson, K. Match, H. Young, G. Clarke, and W. Price one each.

Winning payments were as follow: — G. D, Greenwood £SOO, E. J, Rae £430,

H. f'lr-land £3OO, K. Alison £313, Sir Geo. Clifford £lß.">, A. Raynes £l7O. D J. Goodwin .0170, G. L. Stead £OS, T. O'Donnell £OO. M. Franklin £9O, W. Honeyfield £{lo, P. Bolton £BS, Walsh and Quarterman £3O, F. Selwood £2.1, J. IT. Walters £2O. R. Barlow £2O, Mrs. Crocker £2O, Emenv and Lampitt £ls, Trustees late ,T. Ryan £ls, A. Laing £l.l, G, If. Gibson £ls, .T. 11. Prosser £ls, .T. Britton £ls, Pihama £ls, F. Hall £lO.

Tinkle'- ran well in the Egmont Stakes last week, and was going well on Thursday when she came a cropper, interfering with those running behind her. But for this mishap Flying Start might have beaten the Greenwood pair. As it was, the bearers of the "red and yellow stripes" cleaned up first and second money in the three weight-for-age races held in the province during the past fortnight.

The Poverty Bay summer meeting concludes to-day, Te Kuiti races are set, down for to-day also, and the Woodville meeting follows on Wednesday and Thursdav.

Mr. R. .1. Mason's charges were railed through to Wanganui yesterday.
