A cable was received this week from Lieut. Nevile Arden from Matruli, containing just the one word "Well." Mr. H. Stocker has been appointed by the Controller and Auditor-General to audit the Taranaki Herald and Budget Patriotic, National and Belgian Funds. It is more than probable that the Rev. A. C. Lmvry. who has twice had charge of the Feilding Methodist Circuit, will be elected President of the Methodist Conference this year. Mr. R. McMillan (representing the Independent Cable Service of 'Australia), Mr. Barrac-lough (Renter and Times and ( Sydney Sun Cable Service), and W, G Conlcy (manager ofi the Sydney Morn ing Herald), will attend the conferences of newspaper proprietors at Kotorua next week. Several officials of the Post and Telegraph Department will retire at the owl nf the financial year. They include Mr. P. D. Holdsworth, Chief Post master at Auckland (4B years' service); Mr. MvHutcheson, Chief Postmaster at Dunedin (SO years' service); Mr. A. W. Mann, Chief Postmaster at Westport (40 years' service); Mr. I'. P. Yfliitc, Chief Postmaster at Thames (40 years' service); and Mi\ W. Dommctt, senior telegraphist at Timaru (40 years' service). Consequent upon Mr. A. J. Talbot, Superintendent of Telegraphs at C'hrUtclmrch, having been appointed to Wellington, and Mr. H. P. Wyatt, assistant in Wellington, having been oppointed to succeed Mr. Talbot, several changes are being made in the service. Mr. G. Trowcek, Superintendent at Nelson, becomes assistant-superintendent in Wellington, and is being succeeded at Nelson by Mr. A. W. Oxley, Superintendent at Invercargiil. Mr. A. W. Downon, of Palmerston North, has been I promoted to be senior mail clerk at Gisborne, and Mr. J. Louisson, senior exchange clerk at Palmerston North, becomes officer-in-rliarce of the Wellington Telephone Exchange.
