CONCRETE ROADS.

i COST £3744 A MIL& REPORT TO TARANAKICOUNTY. Concrete roads formed the subject of p. special report presented to the Taranaki County Council yesterday by the .engineer (Air. R. W. Fisher). The report stated:—"l have gone carefully into the question of cost of concrete roads, and I estimate the cost at 8s per square yard. This provides for hand-packed spaul foundation with a layer of 4in concrete on the top of same, and finished off with a tar seal. This works out at £3744 per mile. I have provided for a road 10ft wide, which is the least I cain recommend for the traffic with which we have to contend. The packing for foundation would have to be spauled. as I do not recommend the use of boulders which have a tendency to move, and also the interstices would be extravagant in the quantity of concrete '•equired to fill them up." Sonic discussion followed, an<t it was decided that the cost was too great for the Council to undertake at the present time. It was decided that if .the contracts could be secured for metal supplies in the Omata riding the tar-sealed road already sanctioned should lie pro'ceded with.
