STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.? Stratford. Yesterday Mr. W. Calvert, of Stratford, met with a painful accident last week. He was chopping a piece of wood, when one of the pieces flew up, striking his right eye and splitting it. The sufferer was taken to New Plymouth where it was found necessary to remove the eye. The Stratford Croquet, and Park Tennis Club are holding a garden party on Thursday, February 17, on the Courts, Regan Street. The functions will occupy afternoon and evening, and at night the grounds will be lighted with electricity. A large attendance of ladies have the matter in hand, and as the whole of the proceeds are to be devoted to the Serbian Relief Fund, the function should be a success. A sensational bolt took place in Broadway at 4.30 this afternoon, Mrs. M. Freer had left her pony and gig, with two children in it, standing in Regan Street while she did some business in town. The train startled the horse and it bolted up the street. Spectators expected to see a serious accident, but happily that was averted. A crowd at the comer of Fenton Street and Broadway turned the horse up Fenton Street, and Mr. ,). Thacker. who was on horseback, managed tn pull the bolting horse up in Miranda Street, without any damage being done. FARMERS' PATRIOTIC SALE. Some months ago, the associated auctioneers of Stratford, with Mr. 11, Abraham as chairman, decided to hold a gift sale of stock, and donations weie asked from the farmers in the district. The committee organised canvassing committees in every district and road, and the response was really gratifying. At first it was thought that probably €SOO would be raised, and it must have been pleasing to the committee on Saturday afternoon to find that well over £I6OO had resulted, through their efforts for the Sick ■ and Wounded Soldiers' Fund. The committee invited i Mr. Newton King to act as one of the auctioneers, and that gentleman readily gave his services, and ii seemed like the old days of .Stratford to see the "old [veteran" weilding the hammer. The stock yarded comprised 545 sheep. 110 cattle. 25 horses. 25 pigs, 1 gig, 3 goats, 1 dog. The farmers are to be complimented on so readily donating stock, and the committee and others who helped in any way t" make the sale such a success must be more than uleased with their cll'orts.
