ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
KILLED WHILE DRIVING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Te Kuiti, Jan. 29. An accident happened on the WaimihaTangitu Road last night to Mr. Barlow, his wife, and five children, who were being driven home to Tangitu by Mr. Barlow. The vehicle capsized over a bank, and W. Barlow was killed. • His wife was injured and is suffering from shock! <J. Barlow was injured oil the head, chest, and hand. The children escaped without injury. «l SOLDIER KILLED. Wellington, Jan. 20. A soldi?* returning to Trentham Camp from 'the city last night, fell oft' the train at Hayward's, and was killed outright. The name in his hat was ii. E. Aitehinson, 12th Reinforcements. YOUNG SAILOR DROWNED. Tauranga, Jan. 28. Sydney Plunkett, a youth of IS, a member of the crew of the barquentine Lindstol, of Sydney, was drowned in the harbor this morning. He went for a bathe and got out of his depth. Unable to swim, lie called for help. A hoat from the vessel was within seven yards of Plunkett when he disappeared. The body has not yet been recovered. i Pl'unkett's mother resides in Sydney.
DEATH OF A TROOPER; Dunedin, Jan. '2B. An inquest was held.to-day regarding the death of Trooper Patrick J. Joyce, who returned from the front by the Willochia in November, and died on Wednesday in a boarding-house in Maclaggan Street. The evidence showed that the deceased was a fairly heavy drinker, and complained frequently of being unwell, also of pain from a wound inside. The medical evidence showed that the deceased had no wound, but a scar probably caused by an operation for appendicitis.' Both lungs were extremely congested, and the heart was considerably enlarged, weighing 28 ounces. The cause of death was heart failure in consequence of enlargement, coupled with congestion of the lungs. A verdict was returned accordingly. FOUND DEAD. Dunedin, January 27. Private Patrick J. Jojve, about 35 years of age, a returned soldier by the Willochra in November, was found dead in a boardinghoitse in Maclaggan stroet at 4.30 p.m to-day. He complained of feeling ill in 'the morning. His parents reside at Otakia.
A MAORI DROWNED. An accident resulting in the death through drowning of a Maori named Ware Makao occurred just outside the Opotiki harbor on Monday (say? the East Coast Guardianl, Deceased, who was an experienced boatman, went out during the morning in an open boat to fish, He was crossing the. bar on the retivrn trip, when the boat, on which a sail was set, suddenly capsized. Heavy breakers were rolling in. Makao appears to have struggled to secure a refuge on the upturned boat, but was washed off. The fact that the boat became anchored when she' capsized was a further disadvantage to the struggling man. *;
