THE CARNIVAL

TWO NEW PLYMOUTH ARMIES. BATTLE OF THE BULLION PLANS. Some important arrangements in connection with the 'i'aranaki Battle of the Bullion were made at a meeting of the acting committee in New Plymouth on Saturday afternoon. The secretary reported that Opunake was arranging to hold a meeting to discuss the scheme, and after some discussion he was instructed to arrange for meetings at Opuntike and Manaia.

It was decided to form two armies in New Plymouth. One will consist of sports, civil servants, warehousemen and commercial, farmers and auctioneers, and will be knowiijaa The Grenadiers. The other army, to be known'as The Bombardiers, will be organised by motormen, railways, retailers, professionals, and general workers. A meeting to form the committee to organise and control the Bombardiers' army will be held iin the Town Hall on Tuesday at 8 p.m.. and a meeting on Thursday at the same place and- time will be held to organise the Grenadiers' army.

A discussion took place on the details for scoring in the Battle of the Bullion, and several alterations were made to the plans adopted by Wanganui. It was decided that four companies should comprise a regiment, and that a company should bo made up as follows: £ 200 Privates at Is y 10 16 Lance-Corporals at os .- 4' 10 Corporals at 10s 5 • 8 Lanee»Sergeants at £1 ...-;.* 8 9 Sergeants at £5 40 1 Quartermaster Sergeant .... 10 1 Sergeant-Major ■,.-.. 15 ■2 Lieutenants at £25 -.- .■ 50 1 Captain -. .*. ■ 58

£2OO The value of a company will therefore be £2OO, and to provide the four companies to make up a regiment £BOO will be required. Each regiment requires a Major at £75 and a Colonel at £125, making the value of a complete regiment £IOOO.

TITLES OP THE ARMIES. The following titles have been givefl j to the armies already entered in the Battle of the Bifllion:— New Plymouth (two armies). —The Grenadiers and the Bombardiers. North Taranaki.—The Diehards, Inglewood.— The Rangers. Patea.—The County Yeomanry. . ELTHAM AND PATEA MEETINGS. , A public meeting will be held at | Eltham at 8 o'clock on Wednesday night, and it is hoped there will be a large attendance. The proposal has been fully discussed by tbe Eltham Committee," and while it met with approval there, it has been left with the public to say whether the-district shall participate or' not. All towns of North Taranaki and the people of Patea are entering on the project with enthusiasm, and it is hoped Eltham will join in to provide a connecting link between the North and the South.

A public meeting 1 will he beld at Patea on Friday night. The Patea Patriotic Committee unanimously decided to enter an army, and at Friday's meeting a committee to manage it will be appointed. The decision of Hawera to endeavor to raise money by other methods has introduced a keen element of competition in the South, for Patea is eager to show its practical patriotism.

CAMPAIGN OF THE DIEHARDS. The ladies' committee at lias divided up into sub-committees, each of which will be held responsible for their particular work. Mrs. Marlow, Miss Bugli, and (Bandmaster Hughes will attend to the entertainments, and they will call to their aid any that they think will make this important part of the carnival a success. The grounds committee will see that a suitable place is available for dancing on the green, under lights provided by the lighting committee. Efforts are being made to get a a switchback railway is on the tapis, and the miniature shooting range will again come into use, and there is a general scurrying around to find fresh fields of sport.

THE FETE OF NATIONS. The performers in the Fete of Nations, which will be staged in the Theatre Royal for nine nights, commencing on March 2, are taking a keen interest in their work. Among the soloists will be included Mrs. Birch-Johnston, Miss Peart, Miss K. Bennett, and Miss M. Thomson. It is probable that arrangements will be made to stage the Fete of Nations in other Taranaki towns which have entered armies.
