THE RECRUITING SERGEANT.
Tlio following, are the lines of an old recruiting song popular a hundred years ago, sent to the London Daily Chronicle by a reader: — . "Who'll servo the King, cried the Sergeant aloud; Roll went the drum and the fife played sweetly; .- "Oh, here, Mister Sergeant,'' said 1 from the crowd, "Is the lad that will answer your purpose completely. For my father was a corporal and well be knew bis trade, Of women, wine and gunpowder be never was afraid: He'd march, fight, left, right, froni flank, and centre rank. Storm the trenches, court the wenches r.oved the rattle of the battle, Lived in story, died in glory— And like him I found a soldier's life When taken smooth and rou<*h A very merry high down derry Sort of life enough!"
