Ho jumped into the ice cold water and 6wam to th» mine. Seizing a piece of the broken cable in his teeth,' he towed the mine to shore, running the risk every second of causing an explosion by a careless movement. The mine was destroyed, and Semenischeff received the St. George's Cross of the ' Fourth Degree for hi* courageous action. Early in August Semeniseheff. from his position In the trenches, saw a number of German scouts near the place where some mines had been laid. The Germans began to tamper with the wires, but Semenischeft', although there were eight of the enemy, dashed from the trenches upon the men, armed only with an Austrian rifle without a bayonet. In the struggle that ensued he killed two of his opponents, and th« others ran off. Semenisclicff received three bayonet wounds, and was struck twice on the head with the butt of a rifle.
