ORIGINAL VERSE.

CONSOLATION. The summer sun shines bright to-day, And from gardens all aglow Sweet fragrances are wafted .far away As the breezes gently blow. Joy in the air, joy everywhere In*this fair summer-time, But in thy breast, 0 mother fa'r. Sad is that heart of thine. You gave him life, nursed him on your breast, Caresses gave as only a mother can; Taught Him his prayers, rythmics, and all the rest, Showed him the way, the only way, to be a man; Graven upon your heart his image long ago, For there is no love like a mother's for her son, And though long years for you may come and go, As ho was taught, so his duty he hath done. Summer suns shall shine again, And summer flowers shall bloom The seas and skies be free anain, And the lands from war clouds' gloom, Then lovers shall tell soft and low The old story o'er again, And, mother dear, then you shall know You have not loved in vain. —GEO. ODEY.
