The Department of Agriculture, Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, dated London, January 22. (Note: Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot) :—- Meat.—The market is quiet; small business is doing owing to a continued large supply of all descriptions of homekilled selling at poor prices at present. Prices for frozen meat arc firmer owing to a short supply. Mutton.—Canterbury 7%d per lb, for light-weight; medium, 7%d; other brands than Canterbury are not quoted. Ewes, average price, 7d. . Lamb.—Canterbury, 7%d per lb for all weights; second grade, 7%d; other brands than Canterbury, 7%d for best quality; ordinary quality, 7%d. (Beef.—There is no New Zealand beef of any description on the market. Chilled hinds, 7V 3 d; fores, 5%d. Butter.—The market is quiet at the decline. Danish, per cwi, 150s to IGOs. New Zealand: The spot market is bare owing to slow delivery from the docks. There is a good demand for any butter available at 144s to 146s up to 148s; nnsalted. 1.30s to 100s; fine, WOs to 1425; Australian, 140s np to 14fe; Siberian, 124s to 130s; Argentine, 138s to 1425. Cheese.—The market is fivm and prices continue to advance. Canadian, white and colored, 98s: United States, Cheddar shapes, AGs to flSs; English Cheddar, 104s to lOOs; Cheshire, 114s to 118s.

Hemp.—The market is very firm and is greatly affected by reports' of freight shortage. The market i 3 excited, and accurate quotations tannot be given. Quotations arc nominal. Now Zealand, good-fair, per ton on spot, £45; fair, £43; Manila, new graded, fair £55, coarse £49; January to March shipment, good-fair £44,* fair £42. Tow: Second grade, £25. The output from Manila for the week was 10,000 hales. Wheat.—The market is steady and prices are well maintained. There is a good demand for forward delivery. Canadian, on spot, per quarter, GBs; January to March shipment, 07s; Australian, January to March shipment, steamer (15s fid, sailer 04s. Oats.—The market is quitt; small business is doing. Argentine, on spot, 31s Gd; January to March shipment, 34s on account of freight scarcity. Hops.—The market is steady, with an improved demand. Wool. —Strong market.
