The Hawera telegragh office closes at 8 p.m. HAWEEA EACES. Panmure was scratched yesterday for the Flying Handicap in the first day of the Hawera races. TUEF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The popular local trainer, "Massa" Johnson always has his team in rattling good trim, but somehow or other his luck appeared to be right out recently, and he was beginning to wonder what it was really like to load in a winner again. But he got it ail back at Foxton when Eatana made a runaway race of the Cup, and incidentally returned a nice dividend. The victory was a very popular one, and this scribe joins those who hope that further successes will crowri tlw efforts of this painstaking mentor. It was not the fact that ho won, but the manner in which he won that classes Paraoa as a smart sprinter. There were eleven starters in the Electric Hack Eace at Foxton, but nothing had a chance with Parnoa from the word "go." It was merely an exhibition canter.
Sylvan Dale was made the medium of a warm "punt" in the Carnarvon Welter .on Monday, hut she struck disaster early, falling over Melodist, who stumbled in front of her. Billy Price went down in front of a bunch of horses and iliey galloped over him. Trice's injuries included nasty cuts in forehead and back of head, as well a? minor injuries to his ribs. Kauiki made, a bold showing in the Herringlon Welter on Saturday, and it was rather surprising to see hira neglected on the second day in ithfc Moutoa Welter. Owen McCarten rode him in behind New York and Pariforin to the turn, and in the run home the 1 Maniapoto gelding easily spread-eagled the opposition.
H. Young, with three wins, was the most successful horseman at Foxton. 0. McCarten scored twice, and F. Flynn, McDonell. A. Ward, J. Kelly, R. Manning, C. Carmont, h. Xodder, J. McLean, Tho'rner, Loader, and W. Price each won once.
When Captain Macky failed by a head to catch Wirokino in the Second Hack Hurdles some people reckoned that Flynn had kept'the topweight far out'of it in the early stages of the' race. He was •■Hying'' at the finish, but a horse cannot ,; fly" all the way with a steadier of list nib in the saddle. Indifferent starts are responsible for most surprises in sprint events, and that is what upset the heavily-backed Zion in the Telephone Handicap at Foxton on Monday. The horses lit out for home like' Chows off to a funeral, and Rewa Rewa and Tiora, which were first away, just stayed in front long enough to keep their heads in front of Mnutoa Queen and Ziou. It was a great finish, but a rotten start. Iceberg nearly won a race on Monday. H. Young bustled him to the front at the end of a furlong, and he looked a winner right up within ten yards of the post, where Namur sneaked up through an opening that never should have been given, and the grey went under by a proboscis!
