SWEDEN.

HER NEUTRAL POSITION. STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER. Received Jan. 20. 5.5 p.m. Stockholm, .Tan. 2ii. A debate on the Budget took place in both Houses. Hrvr Riksslag, the Liberal leader, declared that the people demanded a policy of unreserved neutrality. Hcrr Arauting, the Socialist leader, feared that in future Sweden would be unable to maintain a firm neutrality. The Premier urged that it was impossible to doubt that the policy of the Government was sincerely neutral. They were consistently adhering to the principal of co-operation on the common objects of neutrals, especially Denmark and Xorway, and their efforts had largely succeeded. The present grouping of Powers was not a lasting one, and it was possible that any further belligerent, would regret tearing up treaties and violating international law for the sake' of a doubtful temporary advantage. If Sweden had insisted upon less - strict commercial neutrality she might have lessened industrial inconveniences, although these were, no more with Sweden than with other neutrals.
