ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
•DETERMINED TO DIE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunodin, Jan. 23. An elderly man named Hairy Dudiield, a newspaper runner residing at NorthEast Valley, committed suicide in a determined manner this afternoon. He complained of a headache this morning, but went to chuivh, and on his return lay down on a bed and had a cup of tea. His wife and daughter saw him lying down at 1.15 o'clock. Five minutes later they heard a report, and on going into the garden found Dudfield lying on a footpath. The top of his skull was blown oft', and a fowling-piece was lying beside him. Deceased had a grown-up family. So far as is known lie had no financial or other worries. (BATHER IN DIFFICULTIES. Auckland, Jan. 23. A young man, Rudolph Baeyertz, son of Mr. C. N. Baeyertz, editor of the Triad, got into difficulties while bathing at Devonport. Two men jumped in to rescue hi.m, and when landed he was unconscious. Artificial respiration proved successful. A TROOPER'S MISTAKE. Wellington, Last Night. At Trentham Camp to-day Private George Frederick Dickson Stewart, of K Company of the Ninth Reinforcements, rushed into a hut in which were a number of his companions and stated that lie had taken poison by mistake. He died soon after admission to the camp hospital. Deceased was aged 28 years. He en'isted at Invercargill, and his next-of-kin reside in Ireland.
